The FOS Medusa IP (L007919) is a beast of a fixture. It’s essentially a hybrid multifunctional moving head for outdoor stages, combining high-intensity beams, motorized zoom, and intricate strobe pixel mapping into a single, weather-rated batten.
1. The Optical Engine: Three Layers of Light
The Medusa's "face" is divided into layers that can be controlled independently or layered for complex looks:
Layer A: The 80W RGBW Beams: These are the primary sources. With 80 watts per LED, these are punchy enough to cut through high-output video walls. When zoomed down to 5°, they create "needle" beams similar to a dedicated moving head beam.
Layer B: The Cool White (CW) Strobe: 360 LEDs dedicated to that high-intensity, "lightning" flicker. These are usually positioned around the main lenses to create a "halo" effect.
Layer C: The Warm White (WW) Strobe: Another 360 LEDs. Having both CW and WW allows for "Natural" strobe effects or "Blinder" looks that mimic traditional halogen lamps, which is a rare find in IP65 LED battens.
2. Motorization & Kinetic Effects
The "Medusa" name comes from the 10 independent heads. Most LED battens tilt the entire bar as one unit; this fixture allows for asynchronous movement.
Individual 200° Tilt: You can have Head 1 pointing at the floor, Head 2 at the ceiling, and Head 3 oscillating in a wave.
Synchronized Zoom (5°-36°): The zoom is motorized and incredibly fast. You can "snap" from a tight beam to a wide wash. This is particularly effective for "Zoom Pulse" effects where the beam widens and narrows in sync with the beat.
3. Hardware for the Road
FOS designed this for heavy-duty touring. Two features stand out:
The Aluminum "Exoskeleton": The housing acts as a massive heat sink. Because it is IP65, it is a sealed system (no air exchange with the outside), so the aluminum body is crucial for pulling heat away from the 800W of total LED power.
Foldable Clamps: For rental houses, this is a "quality of life" feature. You don't have to remove the Omega brackets to fit the fixture into a flight case. You simply fold them down, saving 5–10 minutes per fixture during load-out.
4.Creative Applications
The "Digital Rain" Effect: By tilting heads slightly off-axis and running a sequence through the 720 strobe pixels, you can simulate falling light or "glitch" textures.
The "Light Wall": Rigging 4–8 units vertically side-by-side creates a wall of 40–80 independent beams that can "sweep" across an audience like a giant hand.
Outdoor Architectural Blinder: Because it's IP65, it can be placed at the base of a building to strobe the facade in "Warm White" for a classic look or "RGBW" for modern branding.
